Volunteering

Running a greengrocer requires many hands – so we’re always looking for people who have time, skills and experience to help make this community-owned business a success.

You can join the brilliant team of volunteers who support everything we do at Dig In – it’s a great way to learn a new skill, get some work experience, and make lots of new friends. We have lots of different roles so you can do something you’ll really enjoy.

Management Committee

We are looking for new Management Committee members to join our team of voluntary Directors that oversee the strategy and direction of Dig-In while supporting our core staff team and volunteers. The shop business itself is trading sustainably, with healthy reserves and a dedicated and professional staff team.

A successful committee really benefits from diversity and drive so we welcome applications for a variety of backgrounds, whether you have volunteered in the shop, invested in the early days, simply pop in to buy your greens or wish to learn more about community run enterprise, do get in touch with us — info@diginbruntsfield.co.uk.

There are various roles we would love to fill, to suit a wide range of strengths and interests such as:

  • Staffing – we want to ensure our staff team are well supported in their varied roles and our staff and volunteer recruitment processes are fair. We are a Real Living Wage Employer.
  • Leadership – chairing of Management Committee and Members Meetings (AGMs)

  • Strategy, vision and future planning

  • Member engagement and communications

  • Secretarial support – annual returns and member relations

The Management Committee meets monthly, and our key responsibilities are:

  • Contribute on average 1 hour/week in your specific area of choice;
  • Attend monthly Management Committee meetings (2hrs per month);
  • Participate in the Annual General Meeting (usually held in February).

New members can be co-opted and inducted over the next few months and formally elected onto the committee at our next AGM (Monday February 21, 2022).

To express an interest or find out more, please email a short introduction to yourself to info@diginbruntsfield.co.uk.

Shop Volunteer

We need volunteer shop assistants to work alongside our Shop Manager and Supervisors. You will serve customers and take on a range of tasks including unpacking and pricing stock, helping with display, and rotating stock. If you prefer you can focus on behind the scenes work like unpacking, pricing and stocking shelves. Dig-In is a friendly place to work and we are lucky to have very engaged and supportive customers. You will work as part of a team of all ages and backgrounds. We welcome volunteers with other skills who can contribute – please let us know!

Before you start you’ll need to come along to one of our regular induction sessions, held online once every month or so usually on a Thursday evening.

You can choose a regular weekly slot or volunteer on an ad-hoc basis. Volunteer shifts are usually 4 hours once or twice a week, but we are flexible based on your availability and needs. We provide training and support. We keep in touch with volunteers mainly by email and are starting to schedule in person volunteer social events again. Volunteers get a 20% discount on our fresh and grocery stock.

If you’re interested in joining our team of shop volunteers, please complete our Volunteer Application Form or alternatively fill out our quick Google Form
