Running a greengrocer requires many hands – so we’re always looking for people who have time, skills and experience to help make this community-owned business a success.

You can join the brilliant team of volunteers who support everything we do at Dig In – it’s a great way to learn a new skill, get some work experience, and make lots of new friends. We have lots of different roles so you can do something you’ll really enjoy.

Shop Volunteer

We need volunteer shop assistants to work alongside our Shop Manager and Supervisors. You will serve customers and take on a range of tasks including unpacking and pricing stock, helping with display, and rotating stock. If you prefer you can focus on behind the scenes work like unpacking, pricing and stocking shelves. Dig-In is a friendly place to work and we are lucky to have very engaged and supportive customers. You will work as part of a team of all ages and backgrounds.

Before you start you’ll need to come along to one of our monthly induction sessions, held on a Sunday in the shop, usually the first Sunday of the month at 10am.

You can choose a regular weekly slot or work on an ad-hoc basis. Volunteers can work full day or a shorter shift, or choose a length of time that suits them. We provide induction and support. Our hours are Monday to Friday 10-7 and Saturday 9.30-5. Volunteers are asked to come in half an hour before opening and to stay for half an hour after closing.

Management Committee

We are always looking for fresh faces to join our Management Committee. Do you have some time, skills and knowledge to support us in our exciting work pioneering a community-owned greengrocer and helping keep healthy food on the high street in Edinburgh?

As a Management Committee member, you will play an important part in our growth, as we develop the business into and beyond its fourth year of operations.  As we grow and develop we need some new skills and talent to take us further in plans to win new customers and deliver more to our customers and community.

If you have a background in business development, retail, marketing, finance or communications, plus some time each month to get involved with this growing community-owned enterprise, we’d be really keen to hear from you. But whatever your background, if you’re interested in joining us, get in touch and let us know what skills and experience you could bring.

Publicity photographer

We’re always looking for people to help us keep our website and social media up to date with images of the people and produce that make up this community-owned greengrocer. We are seeking anyone with photography skills, enthusiasm for pictures of all things food, events and people and a desire to contribute to this initiative on a volunteer basis.

Whether you’re amateur or pro, we’d love to hear from you!

Event volunteers and coordinators

We host events outside the shop and showcase our work at events taking place throughout Edinburgh. We welcome folk to help us plan and run stalls at community events like the Bruntsfield Primary School Fete and Bruntsfield Christmas Fair. We’d also love to hear from you if you have an idea or an event that Dig In might be interested in being part of or hosting – all ideas welcome!

Communications and community engagement

Join our Promotion and Community Engagement (PACE) team and help with our communications, marketing and outreach – online and in the community. Whether you’re able to attend regular meetings and help out as a sub-group member or interested in offering support in any other way, don’t hesitate to get in touch on welovecommunity@diginbruntsfield.co.uk.
